The course is taught over three days. The first two Levels are taught 'back-to-back' on days 1and 2 ; the Master Level being around a month later. You will receive an extensive course manual for the levels you are studying. Follow-up support is provided by telephone for all students, though we find very few new practitoners ever need to call us.
Shoden - Level I
Prerequisite: None
Shoden, means “first teachings” in Japanese, is a one day beginners course. The course is a combination of teaching and experience. The course begins with introductory talks on the philosophy, practice and history of Usui Reiki Ryoho; in Japan and in the West. Students are then introduced to four of the five elements of Japanese Reiki practice: gokai (philosophical precepts), kokyu-Ho (breathing techniques and meditation), tenohira (performing treatments for the self and others), and reiju (receiving a spiritual blessing, or “attunement” from one’s teacher).
During the day students will be given four traditional Japanese Reiki attunements, unique to the system of Usui Reiki Ryoho. Every attunement strengthens, cleanses and balances your personal energy system allowing you to perceive and work with ki easier.
You will then be introduced to the Japanese model of the human energy system, this includes haras similar to chakras in the Indian/Vedic model). We also cover traditional techniques such as kenyoku (cleansing one’s energy before or after treatments and meditation) and joshin kokyu ho (focusing the mind with breath).
This is an experiential course so as much time as posible is given to practicing treatments. You will give and receive at least two or three treatments in the afternoon session.
Benefits of Shoden
Okuden - Level II
Prerequisite: Shoden, Level I
Okuden is a Japanese word meaning “inner teachings”. It builds on Level I; deepening and enhancing the students understanding of Reiki. We review the four elements of traditional Japanese Reik learned on the previous day and you are introduced to the fifth element: jumon (mantras) and shirushi (symbols).
You will be given three healing symbols (shirushi) used in Level II Reiki. Each one has an accompanying mantra. The symbols all have Japanese names, two come from Tendai Buddhism, the other is a sentence in Japanese. The symbols are an important and powerful aspect of Okuden. Using of them in treatment and meditation creates strength and focus in Reiki work.
We extensively cover the three symbols and mantras so you will gain a solid understanding of their origins, nature and how they can deepen and enhance your Reiki practice. You do not have to memorise the symbols and mantras during the day - what are manuals/notes for?
You are given three traditional Japanese Reiki attunements; each attunement helps to strengthen, cleanse and balance the energy system, making it easier to perceive and work with ki. You will have significant time to practice and receive Reiki during the day.
Benefits of Okuden:
Shinpiden: Reiki Level III - Master/Teacher
Prerequisite: Okuden or Reiki Level II
Shinpiden is a Japanese word meaning “mystery teachings”. We begin with a quick review of Levels I & II and then have a Reiki Share where each student demonstrates thier increased development. The Shinpiden course is different for each group as it focuses on the unique needs of each student. This is one reason why the group size is kept small - to ensure a high degree of personal attention for each person. As in Shoden and Okuden, this is an experiental course so a substantial amount of time is devoted to giving/receiving treatments.
You will be given the fourth traditional symbol and mantra. We will discuss this symbol, its roots and use in treatments, self-healing and initiation of others. There is a new meditation practice, kokyu-ho techniques to learn, and ways to deepen and expand their current Reiki practice. You will also receive both the traditional Usui Reiki Ryoho attunement and the ceremony of reiju, meaning “spiritual blessing”. Reiju is the original ceremony; all Reiki attunements evolved from this. It is a simple and inspiring ritual, which is beneficial to give as well as to receive.
In the afternoon you will be fully trained in performing attunements to initiate others into all levels of Usui Reiki Ryoho. The rest of the time will be dedicated to practicing the various attunements, allowing you to become confident in performing them. You will also learn how to perform reiju for others.
